Dog eye ulcer: Is meloxicam dose right? How quickly will it heal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Female | spayed | 9 years and 8 months old | 3.6 lbs

Bella was just at emergency vet and diagnosed with what appears to be a superficial eye ulcer. Was administered pain meds there and sent home with topical ointment and 1.5mg meloxicam .12ml per 24hrs. She is 3.8-4lbs. Is that an appropriate dose for weight? Also, how quickly do these type of things heal? She has to have follow up with her vet in 2 days, she will also be in a e-collar.

Poor Bella! Based on the recommended dose of metacam for dogs (0.1-0.2 mg/kg every 24 hours) the dose you are giving should be fine for Bella's weight. Please monitor for any vomiting, diarrhea or malaise while on this medication and contact your prescribing vet if these occur. If there are no other complicating factors, in my experience corneal ulcers tend to heal within a week to ten days. However, it is very important to do your follow up check to ensure the ulcer is healing appropriately. It's a great idea to use the e-collar as this will prevent any self trauma which may delay healing. Best of luck and I hope Bella is feeling better soon!
