Can neutering make my biting chinchilla affectionate and is it safe?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Chinchilla | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 3 months old | 2.7 lbs

I have a year old male Chinchilla and I've come to find he isn't very affectionate and would rather just be by himself. Now the breeder I got him from said that he was lively and lovable but so far he's only been bratty towards me. I do understand he is still young but sometimes when I tell him no, he will try and bite me. I read online that getting the makes neutered can help but I also saw that there's a chance he might not wake up... How safe is the surgery? What are the chances of him dying?

Steward is very cute! IT can take a while for these guys to feel comfortable with people. They are usually hiding and running from other animals. I would recommend trying to find a treat that Steward really likes. Than you can hand feed him the treat a few times a day. I would only allow you to give this specific treat. That way he can start associating you with a positive yummy treat. I would recommend getting him neutered. You are correct that anesthesia on Chinchillas can be higher risk than dogs/cats but if you find an experienced vet who does the procedure often you will most likely have a great outcome! hope that helps
