My dog ate chocolate. Should I call the vet or poison control now?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 3 years and 1 month old | 62 lbs

My dog got into the chocolate and I'm not sure how much she ate. It was about 8 hours ago or so (best guess). She is 60 lbs and I believe there was less than half a bag left of chocolate covered mangoes, and now there is about 1/4 bag. She has thrown up at all and stool was normal. Should I be worried? She is panting a bit but it's also hot so I can't decipher.

For a 60 lb dog, Olive would need to eat More than 10oz of pure dark chocolate for there to be severe effects. That would be more than 6 servings of this product or about half the bag. Moderate side effects will be seen at 7 or more oz of dark chocolate. Olive will most likely experience some stomache upset mostly because of the mango. However, if she has vomiting or diarrhea that persists for more than 24 hours or if she becomes inappetent or lethargic, she will need to be seen by a veterinarian right away.

Hi there and thank you for your post! Seeing as these are dark chocolate covered mangoes, the concentration of chocolate is higher. I would recommend calling poison control to discuss this further with a toxicologist in order to determine how much chocolate Olive ate. I would recommend calling ASPCA Poison Control and go from there. Once you call them, they can talk to you further in detail, look up specifically how many grams of chocolate Olive ate and let you know if you should go to your vet or not. Please call the following number: (888) 426-4435 This will take you to ASPCA Poison Control hotline. There is a fee but I would at least do that and then make a decision on whether or not you should get Olive seen by your vet. I hope this helps! Please feel free to contact me with any questions / concerns you may have.
