My puppy has diarrhea and hasn't pooped. Is it a bowel obstruction?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Female | unspayed | 33 lbs

My 6 month old Pitt bull pup has diarrhea yesterday and hasn't had a bowel movement since early this morning. She escaped from her cage while I was at work yesterday so I'm not sure if she could have swallowed something to cause bowel obstruction.

It is very common for young puppies to eat things they shouldn't. Typical signs of an obstruction are vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy and poor appetite. If you see any of these signs, I would recommend taking her to a veterinarian immediately. If it's just diarrhea and she's acting OK otherwise, you can give her some plain boiled chicken and white rice and even some canned pumpkin puree. If her diarrhea continues, she should see a vet.

I'm sorry to hear Marley isn't feeling well. It is possible she hasn't had another BM because there is nothing left to push out at this time. An obstruction, however, is also a possibility. If she is eating and drinking well and not vomiting I would watch her for a day. If she starts vomiting or acting lethargic or the diarrhea lasts longer than 24 hours, I would see a vet. Good luck and kisses to Marley!
