My dog's nipple is red and has pus after grooming. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Goldendoodle | Female | spayed | 3 years and 8 months old | 50 lbs

My dog just got groomed and her stomach was shaved. It looks like she has some sort of clipper burn. However, one of her nipples is red, enlarged, and I think there may be some pus coming out of it. What should I do?

Clipper burn is a common problem after grooming, and it should go away on its own in 48 hours. You can use a little Neosporin to soothe and protect the skin, just make sure that Winnie isn't licking at it. However, occasionally nipples get caught in the clippers and get damaged - it's a pretty common problem! If you see that it is red, enlarged, with a creamy discharge, I recommend that Winnie see a vet for evaluation and oral antibiotics.
