Why does my cat eat grass and plants? Is it a sign of illness?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 1 year and 11 months old | 735 lbs

Why does my cat eat leaves from the tree or grass? Is that a sign that my cat don't feel well? It's the big one in the picture. The small cat I don't have him anymore. The big cat of mines is going on 2 years old and he is neutered.

Many cats and dogs eat grass or plants. Some do it from boredom, some like the taste. It does not necessarily mean they don't feel well. Some plant leaves can be toxic to cats so make sure if you have indoor plants they are out of his reach. There are grasses and catnip that you can grow inside that are safe for him and may satisfy his taste for grass and leaves. As long as he is feeling fine it's nothing to be overly concerned about.
