Pet's info: Dog | Pit Bull Terrier | Female | spayed | 8 years and 2 months old | 90 lbs
My dog suffers from allergies and dry eyes. Has had a few eye infections and treated by a vet, they always go away but after a few weeks will return. She is on Optimmune daily but I have noticed yellow/green discharge again as well as her eyes being cloudy and red lines across the brown of her eyes. Should I be worried about blindness and she should be on eye drops of some kind. Ive spent over $2,000 at the vet for this issue and it just keeps coming back. Thank you

I am so sorry to hear that Mia is experiencing these issues with her allergies and with her eyes. Have you considered the possibility of a food allergy? I would discuss with your vet starting on a trial diet of hydrolyzed protein. Food allergies can present with itchy skin, which then can lead to self-inflicted yet problems. Unfortunately from your description of Mia's eyes she needs to go to vet as soon as you can. Place an e-collar on her until you make it in to prevent rubbing or scratching of her own eyes which could make the situation worse. Because eye concerns with dogs, such as infections, corneal ulcerations, cataracts and glaucoma, can progress rapidly I would have her examined by your veterinarian to diagnose the issue. The precise medication can then be dispensed by your veterinarian. Please do not attempt to treat an eye infection at home with any over the counter medications, drops or ointments. This can lead to permanent damage and unnecessary pain or discomfort. I hope this answer was helpful and that Mia feels better soon. Warmest regards to you both!

Dry eye is a chronic problem that takes lifelong therapy to control. If optimmune is not working well you may talk to your vet about switching to tacrolimus to see if it works better for you. If the eye is cloudy with red lines then she does need to be seen to see if this is the start of glaucoma or an ulcer. If either goes untreated then it can cause blindness or loss of the eye. A referral to an ophthalmologist maybbe beneficial if thrrr is not improvement
