Why is my new budgie climbing, not playing, and eating so little?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Unknown - Bird | Male | 1.1 lbs

I just got a new budgie yesterday and I think he's about 4-5 months old and has settled into his cage but is not hand tame yet. He spent almost the whole day climbing all over the cage bars and running around the floor of the cage. He sometimes goes on his toy ladder but other then that doesn't really play with his toys. He drinks water and eats but only a little. He chirps occasionally and doesn't seem like he's in stress but I just want to know what this behavior means.

It sounds like Rio is still getting use to his environment. I would recommend finding a treat he really likes. Than you can give that treat to him by hand to help build a bond/relationship. If he does not settle down soon I would get a slightly bigger cage.
