My elderly cat is declining, how do I know if it's time to let her go?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 10 lbs

My cat is 21 yrs old. She is losing weight and very lethargic. Her eyes have a slight discharge and her breath is beginning to have an odor. She is off balance when walking. ..almost like she is dragging her back leg. Her hearing is going. I believe that it may be time to let her go. Her quality is deteriorating and we cannot afford a massive vet bill that may result in her passing anyway. Help. Advice??

A 21 year old cat is beyond a senior citizen, most kitties do not live quite that long. The symptoms you have described could indicate many serious problems, including hyperthyroidism, diabetes, kidney failure, among many others. At the minimum, an exam and blood work may be able to give you the information you need to decide if it is truly time for her to leave this world. Or your vet could just help you evaluate her quality of life and maybe medications to keep her comfortable for a little bit longer.

HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Sally! 21 years old is a great life! Most Vet hospitals make the euthanasia process as smooth and cost effective as possible, especially if you are an established client. The highest costs come from cremation services. If it is allowed in your area to bury your pets at home then a lot of money would be saved there. Euthanasia is a very humane thing to do for a pet that is suffering and it does sound as if Sally is suffering. I would help her pass peacefully and pain free. Call your Vet and discuss pricing and options. The bill should not be massive. I wish you and Sally the best
