My dog eats grass. Is he trying to make himself sick or just sick?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 5 months and 16 days old

My dog poos around 3-4 times a day and today I'm not sure if he was sick or not - I saw him licking and it looked like he was chewing from the floor and it smelled bad. He runs around the garden like a lunatic to burn off energy and he likes me to chase him and as he runs he bites the grass I'm not sure if he's doing this on purpose to try and make himself sick. He only does it when he's running or if he's playing, any ideas on what is causing this

There are a few theories as to why dogs chew grass - it may be because they have an upset stomach or to trigger vomiting, or it could be because they like the taste and get benefits from the fiber and vitamins and minerals. If he is only eating small amounts of grass I wouldn't worry about it too much, but if he is compulsively going out and eating large amounts you should keep him away from the grass. As far as the possible vomiting goes I would recommend just watching him for additional vomiting or a decrease in appetite.
