Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 1 year and 7 months old | 65 lbs
My adopted pit bull mix puts his paw on me when I am lying down. I sleep on a floor mat, and he stares & then wants to stand over me. he's now strong (60 lbs from 44 lbs in 6 weeks. He will lean into me & push. He was very sick the first month (heartworm, fever, gasping for breath & hookworm). Has a wonderful temperament, he learned to sit, stay, shake hands & lay down. He's developed a bit of separation anxiety that I'm re-working on. I am calm, patient & really love this dog. Is this normal?

The type of behavior you are describing is very typical for a Pit Bull. I actually like to refer to what you are saying as the "Pit bull lean". They do this all the time in veterinary medicine when we are restraining them for various medical tasks. It doesn't sound like you have much to worry currently, and based on what you are telling me it doesn't sound like a very severe case of separation. It sounds like he just likes to hang out and be close when you are at home with him. Once again, very typical for the breed, as these dogs are very loyal and human-oriented. Hope this helps.
