My paralyzed dog has a red, sore anus from incontinence. What helps?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Male | neutered | 7 lbs

I have a special needs dog who is paralyzed on his back legs. He has no control of his pee and poop. Its just comes out. Today ot kinda looked like his anus was a lil red and sore. He doesnt seem lethargic, his poop does not smell different and smells like normal dog poop. Could it be from pooping all day cause he has no control of his poop? Or could it be something else? Is there any home remedies to lessen the soreness of his anus?

I would suggest having Zach's anal glands checked as they me be full or impacted since he can't defecate normally. You can also use a baby diaper cream such as desitin to help ease the area as long as he cannot lick it off.
