My cat licked chocolate cookie crumbs off carpet. Is it toxic?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

If i had chocolate chip cookies and some milk, and i was dipping the cookies in the milk, so crumbs and bits of chocolate ended up in the milk. But when i went to take a drink of the milk, i dribbled just a little couple of drops onto my carpet can i wipe ot up with a warm water washcloth and then soak up the water. Do i need to worry about my cat getting sick, with chocolate toxicity?

Hi there! A few crumbs of milk chocolate probably will not harm your cat. If she got a decent bit, she might have some diarrhea, but I highly doubt this will happen if it was only chocolate residue. Feel free to call your vet if you have concerns, but I think your kitty will be just fine! :)

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear about your mishap. Chocolate intoxication is mostly a problem seen in dogs instead of cats. I don't think you will have any problem with your cat after reading your question. Sounds like you have cleaned up the spill as much as possible and it's likely that your cat won't even be drawn to that area. Even with a dog, I think you would be safe in this situation. Sweetened chocolate is not as toxic as unsweetened baking chocolate regarding pet ingestion. I hope this helps and good luck with the carpet clean up.
