My sick feral kittens have mouth pain and won't eat. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I have young feral kittens (4 weeks?) that are not in great shape. I took them to the vet today but am waiting for results. They have diarrhea (the smaller one had a little blood in one), swollen bellies, the little one has been vomiting, and now when they eat they are both acting like there is something stuck in their mouth or their mouth hurts and they start chewing and clawing at their mouh. What could that mean? They won't take a bottle and have been eating kitten milk mixed with wet food.

I'm sorry the babies aren't doing well. With some feline viral diseases they can develop ulcers in the mouth that can be painful. Make sure to follow up with their vet tomorrow and discuss this as well as any test results. With such young babies illness can easily be fatal but supportive care and feeding if their best chance. In some cases tube feeding and medication via a tube may be needed but please don't attempt without being shown how by your vet clinic. Good luck with them and thank you for giving them a chance.
