My dog was stung by a fly. What symptoms should I watch for?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Fox Terrier | Male | neutered | 12 years and 1 month old | 20 lbs

My dog was stung by a fly today. He started panting and howling in pain. I called my local vet, she said to apply cold compressions and watch for signs of an allergic reaction. We applied to cold compressions, he seemed to calm down, didn't seem like there was any swelling. He had been eating and drinking as normal. Just wondering if there is anything I should be concerned about? Or watch for?

I would continue to watch for signs of allergic reaction for 24 hours, the most common symptoms would be vomiting, diarrhea, hives, and swelling around the face. Also watch for signs of infection around the bite - swelling, heat, or discharge could be seen. If Waffles is not eating as well or seems more lethargic, he may be experiencing pain and may need prescription medications. You can continue to use cold compresses 3 times a day to help with discomfort, as well.
