My cat's ears are red, burning after olive oil. How to afford vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 10 lbs

2 days ago, a well-meaning friend squirted olive oil down into my cats ears after I told her that my cat was itching her ears a lot. Since then, my cats ears have become red and burning hot and she is shaking her head constantly. Her ears are pinned down and she looks miserable. I am utterly broke for the next 2 weeks because I just had to pay rent and bills. I can't get her to the vet, but my heart is breaking over her discomfort. Do you have any advice how I can help her until I have money?

This is a medical emergency, and CB cannot wait to see a vet. She will be in a lot of pain and discomfort for this, and leaving it untreated can lead to hearing loss. Olive oil should never be put into a cat's ears, and I would see if the friend who put it in her can lend you money to afford a vet now. I can also give you some resources that may help you afford a vet. You can see if your vet accepts payment plans, if there is a low cost clinic in your area, or you can apply for Care Credit online. There is also an organization called Red Rover that give grants for treatment of sick animals, and you can see if you qualify for one of their grants. Best Friends also has a list of resources that offer financial assistance on their website. http://www.humanesociety.org/animals/resources/tips/trouble_affording_pet.html?credit=web_id91754962 https://www.redrover.org https://www.carecredit.com http://bestfriends.org/resources/financial-aid-pets http://lessonsfromaparalyzeddog.com/when-pet-owners-cant-afford-veterinary-bills/ The Feline Veterinary Emergency Assistance Program is a nonprofit 501 (c)(3) organization that provides financial assistance to cat and kitten guardians who are unable to afford veterinary services to save their companions when life-threatening illness or injury strikes.
