My dog can't walk, shakes, and falls. Could it be distemper or ivermectin?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed

The stray was suffering from demodex & ivermectin injection was given for almost 25 days and it cleared up. I brought her from hospital but now she keeps shaking her body, cannot get up or walk properly, gets scared of other dogs and cries like she is very much in pain at night. Even if she tries walking she falls. When she was in hospital she was with other dogs and one out of them got distemper and died. Distemper vaccine is given and booster dose will be given on 10th august 2017.

It sounds like there may be something else going wrong with Dobby. I recommend that you take her back to the vet for re-examination. Ivermectin can cause neurologic problems if toxic doses were given, but they usually happen soon after administration. I am most concerned about the falling and walking improperly, as this could indicate a brain or spinal cord issue, or significant pain in her back or legs. It takes approximately 10-14 days to get Distemper once a dog is exposed, and thankfully the vaccine gives some protection within hours of it being given, but it is still possible that she was exposed even before you got her. Distemper can cause neurologic issues as well.
