Why is my cat's fur greasy, scabby, and smelly with skin issues?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 2 years and 4 months old

I need advice regarding my cat ( 2yr) recent scab, skin n fur problem that my cat has developed. He used to have beautiful, shiny fluffy fur, until I say the last 6months or so on and off his fur has gone from greasy, smelly, scabby, weeping. It's not all the time though. I've started 2 bath him and his fur feels lovely after a bath. Then quickly becomes "lifeless" I use frontline spot on every 4 weeks. I comb them and sometimes will find the odd flea but not very often. Any advice would be great

Thank you for your post! Smokey's skin does not look too happy. Not sure what type of shampoo you are using but this almost looks a bit like a skin infection Or dermatitis. Insect bites can sometimes look like this as well. I would suggest starting him on omega 3 fish oil (such as welactin for cats) and use a shampoo such as duoxo chlorhexidine PS combination. It could also be a part of a condition known as eosinophilic granuloma complex. If it does not improve I would see you vet for a further workup as different treatment may be required.
