My dog was neutered 5 days ago. Is his incision infected or painful?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shiba Inu | Male | neutered | 27.7 lbs

My dog was neutered 5 days ago. I looked at his wound and it appears to be a little pus, but it could possibly just be crusting from discharge as well. Not sure. He seems fine. Just keeps trying to lick himself. Shakes sometimes because he's cold. I put his little coat on as well and covered him in blankets. He seems to be better but I'm more concerned about the would itself. He doesn't seem to be in pain but just a bit worried.

It sounds like Siete may actually be showing signs of pain if he is shaking. If you are seeing discharge at the incision site it would be a good idea to have a veterinarian check the area out to ensure it isn't infected. The vet can prescribe pain meds or antibiotics if necessary. An Elizabethan collar (e-collar) should be used to prevent licking. Hope he's feeling better soon!
