What to do if my dog has bright red blood in stool and scoots?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 5 months and 15 days old

My dog had some bright red blood on his stool, I can't fit him in at the vet until tomorrow. He also scoots sometimes (I've noticed over the past couple of weeks) I don't know if the two are related. Right seemed to strain when he had the bloody stool so I don't know if that could be why. Is there anything I should do or be aware of?

The scooting is probably due to impacted anal glands, this is common in dogs suffering from diarrhea. i would recommend fasting your dog for 12 hours and then feeding him boiled chicken and rice in small quantities until you get him to the vet tomorrow.
