Cat nosebleeds worsening. Can I increase Yunnan Baiyao or use it topically?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 14 years and 10 months old | 5.5 lbs

Our cat is having regular and extensive nose bleeds and we are using Yunnan Baiyao in her food to help control the bleeding. It is getting worse and I wondered if we can give her more or use it topically inside her nose somehow to help decrease the bleeding?

Since there are no specific veterinary studies on dosing of Yunnan Baiyao in pets, I can't tell you if it is safe or not to increase the dose. If you think you can get the powder to the right place, it does sometimes decrease or stop bleeding, but I would be concerned that placing a powder in Sadie's nose could be very irritating to the mucosa and may cause sneezing that would make the bleeding even worse. If she hasn't yet, Sadie should see a vet for examination. The vet may recommend doing bloodwork to look for anemia, low platelets, or signs of infection. They may also recommend looking at clotting times. If there is a possibility that she ingested rat poison or a mouse that died before she caught it, she should see a vet immediately. There is also a possibility of a polyp or cancer in the nose causing the bleeding. These can be more difficult to diagnose and often needs referral to a clinic that can utilize endoscopy to look at the inside of the nose and sinuses.
