My tiny abandoned kitten had blood in her stool. Is it serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 8 days old | 1lb

Today we found abandoned kittens, barely a week or two old is say, they were skin and bones and probably never been fed. We fed them, cleaned them, and are keeping them warm. When we stimulated them to go to the bathroom, one had a large amount of red blood come out. It hasn't happened again but we are worried about her. Any suggestions?

Blood in the stool can be a sign of intestinal parasites, bacterial infection, or viral infection, including panleukopenia. If it does not happen again, she will probably be ok. However, if she continues to have diarrhea, she should see a vet as soon as possible as kittens this young can get dehydrated extremely quickly. Also, abandoned kittens are more likely to have infectious disease and she may need prescription medications to resolve the cause of the diarrhea.
