My dog shakes head, licks paws, scratches face. Should I worry?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 2 years and 7 months old | 18 lbs

My dog is shaking his head, licking a lot, scratching his face with his paws, and biting his paw. When he shakes his head, he smacks his head and his teeth shows like he's in pain. He also looks down a lot. His appetite is there though. Is this a cause for concern?

I'm sorry Camus isn't doing well at the moment! Yes, I would be concerned that he is showing these behaviors, as they certainly aren't normal. He could have a dental problem causing these behaviors, or he could have an ear infection. Camus should see a vet as soon as possible, hopefully tomorrow, to diagnose what is causing his symptoms so he can be treated.

This may be an ear infection or a food allergy that is causing the licking of the feet and the facial itching. He needs to be checked by a vet to make sure there is no infection in his ears as continual shaking can cause a hematoma of the ear which is a blood clot, that can be a complication and possibly require a surgery.
