My dog threw up Drontal Plus. Is it still effective for tapeworms?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | unneutered | 3 lbs

My dog got a dose of Drontal Plus prescribed by his vet for a confirmed case of tapeworms. How effective is this medication? He also vomited white foam about 10 mins after receiving it (and other meds for colitis), did the dewormer absorbe? I have kids - I'm paranoid! I really want reassurance he will be properly dewormed. Thank you kindly

Drontal Plus is extremely effective for treating tapeworms. However, I am concerned that if he vomited soon after giving the medication, there is a chance it did not absorb. I recommend that you call your veterinarian for a second dose - it will be safe to re-dose - just to be on the safe side! Next time give it at meal time so there is a lot of food in his stomach as this makes it less likely he will vomit the pill.

Drontal is a good dewormer as it covers tapeworms which it sounds like you are describing. Sometimes it can cause mild, short term diarrhea but generally nothing severe or long term. The medicine will take care of worms. If Harley is eating still and not vomiting or having bloody stool you can monitor him for the day. If it continues or he gets worse then I would have him checked for another reason such as dietary problems or an infection
