My tiny puppy has low blood sugar. How often should I feed him?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 2 months old | 0.8 lbs

I have a teacup Maltipoo who's 8 1/2 weeks old who's blood sugar levels keep being low. I'm debating on whether I should put him to sleep or not. Its hard for me to keep feeding him every 2 hours for the next year.

Puppies have limited glucose reserves. This is why they need to be fed frequently. It is normal and not a reason for euthanasia. Have him examined by your veterinarian to rule out any medical causes. Feed a good quality puppy food and supplement with NutriCal, a calorie dense paste that is used for quick energy. As he gets older, you won't need to feed him as often and by one year of age, he should be eating twice daily.
