My Shih Tzu is aggressive towards cats. Can I safely adopt a cat?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | neutered | 30 lbs

Just need a little guidence. I currently have a very little feisty shih tzu and was looking into getting a cat. My only problem/question is if I should even consider adopting a cat because when my dog has had encounters with cats it's always an aggressive reaction and I'm afraid of what could happen if brought into the same environment. What would be your advice to me? And if I should, should I adopt and kitten or adult? Thanks in advanced!

Given that Lui has always had an aggressive reaction when he encounters cats, I would not recommend getting one. His reaction could be even worse in your home, as he would consider it his territory and he may want to attack anything that enters his territory. Lui could go great harm to a cat, and I'm sure you don't want that to happen. Some dogs are meant to be only pets, and that may be the case with him. For the safety of a cat and given his history of aggression with them, I would not recommend adopting a cat. I hope this helps!
