My kitten keeps sneezing after vet check. Should I be worried?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Siberian | Male | neutered | 2 months and 26 days old | 0.8 lbs

My kitten (he is 2 months and a half) has been sneezing for 3-4 days in a row now. He is fine otherwise, eating properly, playing... But the sneezing won't stop. I went to the vet yesterday, they checked his lungs, his temperature, it was all fine so they sent us back home, but he is still sneezing. Should I be worried?

Cats can commonly be afflicted by upper respiratory viruses that can cause sneezing, nasal discharge, conjunctivitis and corneal ulcers. These viruses can be latent in a cat's system and then in times of stress or a weakened immune system (like in a kitten) they can cause illness. This is what I suspect is going on with your cat. Oftentimes cats can overcome a viral respiratory infection on their own but sometimes they need antiviral drugs, eye medications, and possibly antibiotics to help them get over the virus. If the illness continues to last more than 3-5 days, of if Mushu stops eating or the sneezing becomes excessive then I would take him back to the vet for a recheck. Most times these cats just need supportive care to get through the illness.

My guess would be that Mushu has a viral upper respiratory infection. This is the most common cause of sneezing in a young kitten, and can also cause clear ocular and nasal discharge and minor eye irritation. If Mushu's eyes start to look red or if he is squinting, if he develops thick colored nasal or eye discharge, or if his appetite becomes decreased you should recheck with your veterinarian. Otherwise I would expect his sneezing to resolve in the next 4-5 days.
