My senior German Shepherd has a growing lump. Could it be cancer?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | neutered | 15 years and 7 months old | 100 lbs

My best friend, a German Shepherd born around 2002, has problems I really need help with. I hope it's not the C word, and I know he's getting up there in age. He developed a lump under his body, it slowly grew, and then a second is developing, growing too. I don't know what it is, and I'm financially in a hardship. He doesn't act like it hurts, but will lick it every so often. What is this? Please, I need help, and I hope you can be the one to help me. Thank you, from Buddy, and myself.

I am afraid that that mass does look cancerous. It is probably one large mass rather than two smaller ones. The back part of it appears to be changing color. it is possible that it is benign, but even benign tumors can outgrow their blood supply and the tissue can die. I recommend that you have Buddy evaluated by a vet and surgery discussed. If the tumor opens up, he would definitely need medical care.
