Why is my cat breathing hard, huffing, and squinting his eyes?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 2 years and 9 months old

Hello, my cat has been breathing very hard in his sleep for a while now. His head moves slightly up and down when he's trying to breathe. When he's awake, sometimes he'll make huffing sounds. He also squints his eyes a lot . He's almost 3 years old in October, has never been to a vet unfortunately due to expenses, and has not been neutered. When he was a kitten his head hung to the side a little bit. Now that he's older it doesn't which may be an underlying issue.

Hello and thank you for your post! With your description, it sounds as if Sammy is dealing with some sort of respiratory problem. This could be a respiratory infection (bacterial, viral or fungal), allergies, asthma, etc. He does have some dry, crusted discharge in his right eye in the pictures so that may be more indicative of some sort of infection. If you are able to, I would get him into a veterinarian to be seen. The longer you wait, the more this will potentially cost to treat. If you can catch it early on, the cost will likely be less. Of course this depends on what the primary problem is. Please feel free to contact me with further questions / concerns.
