My old cat is losing weight, eating more, and vomiting. What's next?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Siamese | Female | spayed | 13 years and 11 months old | 8 lbs

My mom has a cat who is about 14 years old now. She's lost a lot of weight and has an increase in appetite, but if she eats too much, she vomits. Took her to the vet, they did blood work and I just got off the phone with them. Her levels are normal and ruled out hyperthyroidism and diabetes. The vet said it could be liver disease, but she isn't drinking more than usual like he said would happen or peeing excessively. Could it be liver disease or something else?

Thank you for your post! I am sorry to hear Shurbee is not doing well. My concern at this age would be some type of malignancy. In older cats, one of the more common things we see in regards to cancer is intestinal / GI lymphoma. This does not always show up on blood work. I would highly recommend Shurbee get an abdominal ultrasound as the next diagnostic step. Hope this helps and feel free to contact me with any further questions / concerns

I'm sorry to hear Shurbee is having issues. There can be multiple reasons for the signs you are seeing, including diabetes, kidney disease, liver disease, , heart disease, inflammatory bowel disease, or an underlying cancer. If bloodwork has has ruled out some of these options, a further workup with X-rays or an ultrasound may be warranted, or possible consult with an internal medicine specialist. Good luck!
