Why won't my parakeet sleep in his new cage? How can I help?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Unknown - Bird | Male

My parakeet won't sleep at night- first few nights ago when I had first gotten him, he would sleep fine. He's moved in a new cage and now won't sleep (it's been 2 days) at least I don't think he's sleeping. Usually when I close the lights he'll start falling asleep. But when I went to go see him this morning he started falling asleep while I was sitting there with him. & I have a general question: is there a way to prevent my parakeet of having mites?

Hi there and thanks for your post! Parakeets are creatures of habit and when you switch out their environment, it can be a bit of a mid life crisis for them! If you have mirrors in the cage right now, that actually encourage reproduction / courtship towards his reflection which can keep him up at night. I would remove any and all mirrors from the cage for now until he is used to the new cage. I would also get a new toy that is unique to this new cage you got. It will take some time but I think this will help. Please feel free to contact me with any other questions / concerns you may have.
