Why is my 10-year-old cat stumbling and scratching her neck?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Mediumhair | Female | spayed | 9 years and 8 months old | 6.6 lbs

Hello, my elderly cat of 10 years old has been showing some problems with her balance. Occasionally she stumbles when walking but she still jumps onto counter tops and couches. She also scratches her neck area a lot causing small sores. She still begs for treats through out the day, eats and drinks plently water. I have only noticed the balance problem over the past few days and can only take her to a vet in 2 days. She is an inside cat. Do you have any advice please?

Balance issues as such could be due to a brain condition or middle ear infection in most cases, there isn't much you can do at home i'm afraid as this needs to be diagnosed physically by your vet to assess her neurological responses. as she scratches the neck area there is a fair chance that it's the middle ear that is causing this, in that case an antibiotic course should solve the problem.
