My parvo puppy is drinking water. Is it safe to stop his saline?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 8 lbs

My pup got parvo he's being treated at home using supplies that his dr gave us (saline and antibiotics) his vet will be closed tomorrow and the next day. Today He started drinking water on his own (no syringe) should I skip giving him his saline treatment? He's due for it in 3 hrs 40 mins. (I hope I'm spelling saline right? It's the bag with liquids I have to give it to him using a needle in his neck)

I would go ahead and continue the fluid administration as directed by your vet. It won't hurt him and more hydration will definitely do him some good. I would definitely follow up with your vet when they are open again.

No keep giving it as very often clinical improvement has to be consistent before any treatment can be stopped, especially treating a serious condition as parvovirus infection. Please do not hesitate to contact us again on the forum or by requesting a consultation if you have any more questions or to discuss it any further.

It is good that Titan is now drinking water on his own. I would recommend still giving him the saline under his skin until his water and food intake are normal and his diarrhea and vomiting have completely resolved.
