My dog has parvo. Can he recover at home with vet-prescribed meds?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | 2 months and 26 days old

My dog has parvo and been taken to vet. The vet gave us medications and decided to take him home because the dog might get even stressed staying at the clinic. Can he recover from parvo eben staying at home with his medications?

Ideally, depending on the severity of parvovirus infection, treatment in hospital should be performed, but, if clinically stable, it is not wrong to have him back home as stress can play an important role in the clinical course of the disease. Actually it could be even beneficial. Please do not hesitate to contact us again on the forum or by requesting a consultation if you have any more questions or to discuss it any further.

I am so sorry that Tumi has Parvo. It is a very serious illness that can be deadly. The best option for treatment is hospitalization at a veterinary clinic where they will give a constant rate of IV fluids, antibiotics and try to control vomiting and diarrhea. That being said, I have seen many dogs survive Parvo with home treatment such as subcutaneous fluids (injecting fluids under the skin) and oral antibiotics and medication to stop the vomiting. If he isn't doing well with the home treatment, you always have the option of keeping him in the hospital for treatment.
