Can I tell my turtle's gender from photos or do I need a vet?

I am afraid without a photo of your turtle I cannot tell you if he or she looks healthy. You need to upload a photo for that. You can tell a male turtle by its longer tail and that the bottom of his carapace (shell) appears hollowed out, so it would easily fit on top of the rounded shell of a female. Females have a flat bottom of the shell.

In box turtles, males tend to have a more colorful head, red eyes, short and thick claws on the hind feet and a concavity of the plastron (bottom shell). In the image provided, it is difficult to make out these details. You can also have the turtle examined by an experienced herp vet to determine sex.

Leonardo may be too young or too small to accurately determine gender. Wait until he/she is about 4 inches in length. Female sliders have a smaller, thinner tail and shorter front claws than males do. the cloaca, or vent, is located closer tot he body in female sliders.

Males have longer front claws and a longer, thicker tail. Determining sex can be difficult in turtles measuring less than 4 inches. Consider separating the turtles until the smaller one is larger. Sliders can be quite territorial and a larger turtle may injure a significantly smaller one.

It's quite difficult as their shells are very similar. The male has a long thin tail with a slit like cloaca far up the tail. Whereas the female has a short fat tail with a star shaped cloaca close to the body. If in doubt you may need to go to a reptile vet.

Hello. I think there may be some areas of shell rot that I can see on the photos on the carapace - the marginal scutes It is truly difficult to tell on those photos. What does trouble me on the photos is the bulging eyes. It is indicative of hypovitaminosis A (deficiency of vitamin A). Between those two things I think you should get him to a vet for an exam. Thanks for reaching out about Franklin and including photos. This appears to be a yellow bellied slider, probably a male (long tail) and very young (under 1 year). Most hatch in spring but if captively bred, environmental conditions can be manipulated. Good luck.
