When is my puppy ready to roam the house under my supervision?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature American Shepherd | Male | neutered | 1 month and 19 days old | 20 lbs

I just got my new Mini Aussie puppy and i love him to death! he is doing so well at potty training and sleeping in his little pen. and whining at night when he wants to go potty and then going back to bed. During the day while i am watching tv i have him in a little play pen next to me and is doing really well. At what point can i let him roam the house under my supervision??

That is up to you! I would recommend starting with him still confined to the same room you are in - and choose one room at a time. I also like to put a cat collar on young puppies so that you can find them easily. Also, you know that if the bell on the collar is suddenly quite, Scout may be getting into trouble! Keep plenty of puppies toys available, and keep the room picked up of anything that he may decide to chew on, including clothes, shoes, and electrical cords. Make sure he gets frequent potty breaks - I recommend waiting no longer than their age in months 2. So if Scout is 1.5 months old, you should take him out every 3-4 hours.
