Why does my dog pant, shake, and isolate herself every year?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | spayed | 5 years and 7 months old | 12 lbs

My dog had an episode of panting, shaking and isolating herself last year. The vet did an X-ray and said her liver was a bit small, intestinal tract a little inflamed but that's it. No diarrhea no vomiting. This year, about the same time, same thing happened. The vet gave her motion sickness meds and meds to help empty her stomach. 2 weeks later, she's back to normal. Any idea what this could be? She's a 12 pound Chihuahua (mix?) we rescued as a puppy. She's 5 now

There are many possibilities for what you are seeing in Bella. I feel like the timing of the events is coincidence, but if you are having summer parties and she is getting food she is not used to, or if you are traveling more than normal, this can certainly cause some issues. Potential causes for the vague symptoms she is expressing include pain (like in her back or belly), pancreatitis, intestinal parasites, food intolerance or allergies, IBD, among other things. If Bella's liver is smaller than normal, she may have issues digesting food properly. If her symptoms only happens infrequently, I think it is ok to continue to monitor Bella. If it starts happening more often, it may be time for additional diagnostics like bloodwork, x-rays, or abdominal ultrasound.
