Why does my dog still have skin bumps and itch after vet treatment?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 1 year and 4 months old | 75 lbs

My almost 1.5 year lab mix has seemed to always have some type of skin issue for the past year or so. little pus/ red bumps on her belly & licks belly often. She has been biting & licking her back right paw. I took her to the vet about 3wks ago & said she may have had fleas-noticed some flea poop in her fur-was on a natural spray & not a medicated flea and tick treatment-now on bravecto-Gave her apoquel, antibiotic & powder. Only give apoquel every few days when licking more often. Cause/help???

There are a few causes for the bumps you are seeing. Fleas are still a possibility. Bravecto is an excellent preventative, but it can still take 3 months for all of the fleas in Elli Mae's environment to die. She could still have a bacterial infection. Sometimes these infections need a second antibiotic or a longer round to effectively treat. I have occasionally used antibiotics for 3-4 weeks to get infection under control. Unfortunately, apoquel does not work very well on an as-needed basis. It works much better when given regularly. It is typically prescribed for twice daily use and tapering to once daily use. It is safe for long-term use. You can also try a medicated shampoo as a treatment, like Dechra DermaBenSs Shampoo which will help to flush the follicles. If the problem continues for another week, I would recommend a re-check with your vet.
