My puppy's teeth scrape when he yawns. Is it normal? Vet needed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 5 months and 13 days old

When my dog yawns and then closes his mouth it sounds like his teeth are scraping against one another but I can't really tell for sure or see any problem - it doesn't seem to bother him and I don't know how many puppy teeth he has left to lose. Should I go to the vet?

It could be that Ziggy is doing this on purpose. Another possibility is an injury to his teeth or jaw that is causing misalignment. Between 5 and 7 months, the adult canine teeth, premolars, and molars are starting to come in, and his loose baby teeth could be the cause of the sound you are hearing. If it doesn't seem to bother him and he is still able to eat and drink, I would continue to watch for it. If it is occuring still in 1-2 weeks, a checkup with the vet may be able to figure out what is causing it to happen.
