Kitten lost a tooth at 5 months. When will her adult canine appear?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 5 months and 3 days old | 2 lbs

Picked up a stray just over a month ago, looked about 3-4 months (according to vet). She lost a canine tooth the day we got her and it's been more than a month with no sign of a new tooth emerging. Can't tell if that was a permanent tooth or not. How long would a permanent tooth take to grow after loss of a milk tooth?

Congrats on your new kitten! Usually all baby teeth are replaced by adult teeth by 6 months of age. So if Luci does not have an adult canine tooth by 6 months it could indicate an issue with her dentition. Perhaps at the time of her spay dental x-rays could be taken if her adult tooth does not emerge. Sometimes after the loss of a tooth part of the tooth root is retained. X-rays can ensure that the root is not still present. Retained roots can cause health issues later in life.
