Dog chased skunk, has nose scratch. Should I worry about rabies?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Shepherd - miniature | Female | spayed | 1 year and 5 months old | 35 lbs

Dog chased skunk last night. Unsure if she or the skunk bit each other. Today we noticed a small scratch on her nose. She is up to date on immunizations and had her 1 year old booster in may. Should we assume the skunk had rabies and take her for another booster? Or what should we do? The skunk appeared normal though it was too dark to see. It fled as quickly as possible but did not spray our dog.

Depending on the severity of the scratch (feel free to post a picture of it) Lily should be checked by your veterinarian. Antibiotics may be needed but extra vaccination shots are not. Disinfection can eventually be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any scratching (if any).
