My bonded dogs fought suddenly. Can they ever live together again?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 2 years and 5 months old | 65 lbs

Hello. My dog Chester and my boyfriends pit dog had, what appeared, to be a great bond with each other. They played often and would sleep on the same couch together etc.... Until one day while I was sweeping, the two began fighting while standing behind me. I didn't see any warning signs leading up to this. We separated them for a week and reintroduced with luck for 2 weeks and then they fought again and that time was much worse than the first. Are these two doomed for living in the same house

I would recommend keeping the two dogs separated as best you can for now while you try and figure out what is going on. The first step is to figure out which dog is initiating the aggression. This dog may have anxiety that can be treated with an anti-anxiety medication. Once the dogs in Miami level has decreased it may help them get along better. I would also recommend asking your vet for a referral to a veterinary behaviorist that can help identify the problem and give you tips and tricks on how to re-introduce the dogs and keep them happy and safe well together. It may be challenging and time-consuming at first but if you're willing to put in the work I think you can have the dogs live happily together again. Best of luck.
