Why are my cat's claws dark brown and not white? Is it normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 1 year and 11 months old | 8 lbs

A few of my cats claws seem kinda dark and brownish. There are no growths on them or anything and they don't seem to hurt her, but they're like brown instead of white. Why could this be?

Most cats have clear/white claws but occasionally they can be darker. This can be from natural pigment or a response to inflammation or infection. If you see brown waxy discharge around the nail that is turning the nail brown, this can be a sign of an infection. If this is the case, a veterinarian should evaluate her to see if there is an infection.
