It is not uncommon for pets to feel nauseous after surgery. If she is vomiting water, I would not give her food or water overnight. If she continues vomiting she should be seen by a veterinarian to figure out if there is something else going on that could be unrelated to the surgery. As long as she doesn't vomit overnight, you can start offering a small amount of water. If she holds that down, you can then give her a small amount of her regular food.

This could be delayed stress on her system from the spay procedure itself. If the incision site looks normal and has no foul odors or discharge, that rules out any incision site complications. I would recommend getting her seen by your vet for an early follow-up visit for antibiotic therapy (typically metronidazole) to help her GI tract get back to normal. You can also give over-the-counter Culturelle to help get the normal bacterial flora back and a bland diet of either boiled plain chicken and rice OR Purina EN Gastrointestinal canned food to help settle things down. The bland diet can be given up to 7 days; it is recommended to slowly transition pet back to normal dog food.

I'm sorry to hear that Shinoda has been unwell since her surgery. The pain medication can potentially cause some gastrointestinal upset, especially if she has not been taking it with food. If she is still vomiting and not eating since stopping the pain medication, I would advise you to take her to the vet asap, as I worry about sepsis, or infection from the surgical site. In the meantime, you can try offering her small frequent meals of boiled chicken and rice, starting about 8 hours since her last vomit. This may help to settle her stomach and allow her to digest the food better. I hope this helps, and that Shinoda is feeling better soon.

Hello. So sorry to hear that Lucy is not feeling well. Yes, that can be normal to feel nauseated after surgery and throw up. I would not be too worried about her not eating for now. Let her stomach settle down and just keep offering her very small amounts of water every couple hours. After 6-7 hours, if she has not vomited, you can offer her something bland like a scrambled egg or some rice or a piece of bread (no butter, no spices, no oil, etc) and just a small amount. Do this for a couple days. If there is no vomiting you can go back to her regular diet after a couple days. If she continues to vomit or does not want to eat then I suggest you call the vet clinic that did the surgery or an emergency clinic in your area to get further care. I hope this helps. Best wishes! Dr. Amber
