My dog is terrified of noises, people, and going outside. What helps?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 7 months and 6 days old | 25 lbs

My dog is terrified of everything. Little noises and such bother him and we thought he'd grow out of it. Its become a problem when hes taken outside to use the bathroom and he cannot due to being scared and shaking. If anyone comes to the house he shakes and vibrates with fear. Even people who live here, such as my dad cant go around him and he's been here since he was a puppy. If my dad is sitting down he'll come right to him. He's never been abused, we had him at 6-8 weeks. What's wrong?

Oh dear, poor Axel! Some dogs have innately anxious and nervous personalities, and German Shepherds (it appears that Axel has a fair amount of Shepherd in him from the pictures!) are known for anxiety issues. Continue gently trying to socialize Axel with new people and surroundings, and offer small treats and gentle encouragement as he is introduced to a new situation. Some dogs also benefit from thunder shirts ( http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=24037 ) for anxiety, as well as calming pheromone collars or diffusers ( http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=33000 ). If all else fails, consider consulting a veterinary behaviorist to discuss behavioral modifications to try at home, and possible anti-anxiety medication. I hope that all goes well!
