My 11-year-old Lab won't eat, drink, or get up. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | unneutered | 11 years and 7 months old | 95 lbs

Hello, my 11 year old black lab is usually a very healthy and active dog. Last night he was normal, but this morning he was walking very slow. Now he won't get up at all and I can't get him to eat or drink at all. He doesn't have any noticeable sores and he's not groaning or showing any pain.

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I'm sorry to hear about your dog. It sounds like Cash needs to be evaluated by a veterinarian. If he has had such an abrupt change and is now not eating or getting up, I would recommend he be seen as soon as possible. Unfortunately that would mean an emergency vet visit but for an 11 1/2 year old Lab it could mean severe pain from arthritis, trauma, some internal organ disease, cancer, or some infection. There are just too many possibilities at this point. If it's nothing too serious you will have alleviated his issues today and have peace of mind. If it is something serious then he will be in the place that is best suited to take the best care of him. Good luck and keep us posted!

I would be concerned that Cash somehow injured himself yesterday, or has something causing him pain. Because of his age I would recommend taking him into the vet to be checked out. He could have an injury that needs to be treated or some type of metabolic issue going on that is causing him to be lethargic.
