Best canned food for small dogs with gas and sensitive stomachs?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 1 year old | 11 lbs

I need a dog food recommendation please. My vet recommended organic dog food because my dog scratches alot. So we switched from grain free dry kibble to Organix small breed dry kibble and dog was better. Since my dog seemed bored w/kibble we give him the Organix canned food sometimes along w/the kibble like 1x a week only. We notice Cookie gets foul flatulence w/ canned food. Without he doesn't get gas. I don't know what other canned food I can give him that won't upset his stomach.

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Being a smaller dog, he May not necessarily be getting bored with his kibble. Smaller dogs can be quite picky and selective about what they eat. Especially if they've already been introduced to flavorful dog treats and/or people food. For itchy skin I like Natural Balance LID (Limited Ingredient Diet). The Organix wet food you fed may have been the 3.5oz stew bowl and those may be too rich for Cookie. So you could try just the 12.7 oz cans instead of go with Natural Balance LID dry and wet.

I'm sorry to hear of your concerns with Cookie. A stinky dog is no fun to deal with. Increased gas is a common complaint with many canned foods. Different types of canned food such as chicken versus fish, for example, may be better tolerated by individual pets. I would recommend trying a couple different types of canned food to see if Cookie tolerates one better than the other. A high quality probiotic may be helpful as well.
