My dog's swollen anus is leaking blood and pus. Can I treat it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 8 years and 10 months old | 40 lbs

My dog's anus is swollen & leaking smelly brownish stuff, as well as a little blood & pus. I tried squeezing his glands, nothing came out. What could it be & are there home remedies I can try? He seems depressed but is still eating & drinking regularly.

Ouch, poor Early! If you are seeing blood and pus along with brown fluid, it sounds like his anal sacs may have become infected and have now ruptured. With the presence of pus, there isn't anything you can do at home for him. I would take him into a vet as soon as possible to have this area cleaned and examined. If his anal sac has ruptured, it will need to be sutured closed and he will need antibiotics for infection.
