My dog destroys foam. Why does he do this despite toys & exercise?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | neutered | 6 years and 11 months old | 100 lbs

My dog, a 7 year old lab, whom I adopted 2 years ago, likes to tear up anything with foam. He does not eat it, just like to rip and tear any foam apart. He has tore a couch cushion apart and my son's memory foam mattress. Any suggestions why he does this. He has plenty of toys also and gets a lot of exercise daily.

Unfortunately some dogs enjoy destroying things like foam beds. It may be a remnant of behavior in the wild, such as tearing feathers or fur off a dead animal. If your dog only does it while you are gone for long periods it could also be related to separation anxiety (some dogs will exhibit their stress/anxiety by being destructive). You can talk to your vet about trying a trial of medication for separation anxiety if you are interested. You can read more about that condition at http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A
