My active young dog won't eat, getting skinny, enlarged prostate.

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Kelpie | Male | unneutered | 20 lbs

My 15month old kelpie won't eat, he has always been super fussy but the last couple of months he hardly touches his food. I've tried everything. Leaving do food out, puppy food, dog food, human foo. But still nothing. He is starting to get very skinny, too skinny even for a kelpie. I took him to the local vet that said he has a large prostate one of a 10 yo dog. He is very active and Dosen't seem unhappy.

It is not normal for a young dog like Cooper to not eat and be so skinny. If he has an enlarged prostate neutering him should help the prostate get smaller. Some male dogs spend all their energy trying to find females and will be thin from this. Again neutering is recommended. If your veterinarian feels his condition is due to a prostate infection or cancer doing an X-ray and blood panel are indicated. They may also recommend a biopsy. Please don't wait until he is too thin, with the proper diagnosis and treatment he should get better. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Cooper.
